Research on Data Driven School Improvement

• The Value-Added Research Center (VARC) at UW-Madison conducts basic research to develop new and useful models of the productivity of schools, teachers, and administrators. The center also works with school districts and states to disseminate these models and assess their real-world utility.
  
  
• The Center for Data-Driven Reform in Education (CDDRE)
  CDDRE at Johns Hopkins University has been working since 2004 to help low-performing schools meet their states' standards through data use.
  
  
• From Vision to Action: How School Districts Use Data to Improve Performance - This web page provides access to the executive summary of this extensive paper on data use in schools. • Data Driven Decision Making: An Online Lesson - This online lesson by Rick Phelan from Sonoma State University offers a quick introduction to the components of Data Driven Decision Making with links to a number of informational resources.
  
  
• Implementation of formative feedback programs: Two cases of how school leaders use and make sense of Measures of Academic Progress - This dissertation by DDIS research assistant Reid Prichett focuses on the theory, design, and implementation of formative feedback systems in two elementary schools. It provides insight into several topics including: the strength of school leadership, and particularly principals; and the connections between interventions, assessments, monitoring of assessments, and opportunities given to teachers to discuss assessment results.
  
  
• Problem-solving teams and data-driven school leadership: A path toward the next generation of special education services - This dissertation by DDIS research assistant Chris Thomas provides insight into the ways in which school leaders in two urban elementary schools developed a capacity to meet the demands of high-stakes accountability policies and the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) by reshaping instructional practice through the implementation of problem-solving teams (PST) and the development of socio-technical systems grounded in student achievement data.
